Breaking Away
The first move we will be viewing in Film Appreciation Society this year will be
Breaking Away. Set in Bloomington, Indiana (
Indiana University), in the 1970's, it tells the story of Dave Stoller. Dave is a bicycle-enthusiast, and dreams of not only racing with the Italian cyclists, but also actually
being an Italian. His poor, "Cutter," lifestyle prevents him from becoming anything more than a quarryworker, though, just like the rest of the high school graduates raised in Bloomington (Cutter = Stone Cutter). Only when he has his dream stripped away from him does he realize that he doesn't need to become someone else in order to become great.
