Olivia Tremor Control - 04/15/05

The Marquee. After seeing the Olivia Tremor Control, I think I can safely say that that was the best live experienc I've ever had. After finding a parking space, we decided to go have our dinner at The Grille (a very nice Cajun cheeseburger). Around 10:15, we walked down the street to the 40 Watt Club. After 10 minutes or so, Elf Power walked onto stage, and began to rock. I was standing next to some moron who insisted upon jumping up and down, crushing my foot several times. Elf Power played for a good fourty or fourty-five minutes before they exited the stage. My friend Britney and I moved up a few spots so we could see -- some guy with a rat tail (sorry guy, you seriously can't bring that back. I can see the mullet being a "ha-ha-that's-funny" haircut, but the rat tail is just too trashy. The anticipation of Olivia Tremor Control coming was through the roof for me -- this is a band that was only playing one date in America, one of only three shows that they planned on playing at all. After exiciting myself, Will Cullen Hart, Bill Doss and co. walked onto the stage. They opened with A Peculiar Noise Called Train Director -- one of my favorites from Black Foliage. They then went straight into Jumping Fences -- one of my favorites from Dusk at Cubist Castle! I thought I was done with being bothered with, with that fool crushing my foot. I was all too wrong. This is where the annoyances really start to kick in for Britney and I, unfortunately. First, some guy shoved himself up in front of us just so he could text-message his girlfriend with his cell-phone raised high above the crowd. Why he would desire to do this during probably the most important show of his life, I don't know. Sucks for him though, he missed one damn good show. After about Courtyard, this guy moves out of the crowd and goes to see his honey, I guess. Britney and I were good for another song or two, before this couple moves in to sort of sway around in front of us, just enough so we couldn't see the stage. After California Demise 3, I asked if we could possibly move in front, for our short statures would not obscure their view of the show. They agreed, and thanked us for asking for politely. We were really enjoying it now, as we were only two or three heads back from the stage. Too bad our perfect view is taken away with us, when this really, really ugly couple shoved their way in front of us. This guy was bald, and his girlfriend, on top of having a hairy-ass back, had a man-face and a bowl-cut! They were hardcore dancing with each other, satisfying themselves by knocking into Britney and I. And then this fool proceeds to yell out his requests for I Have Been Floated. I thank him for reminding the band for playing this, but after him yelling it in my ear 8 times, I was ready to punch him in the throat. This is freaking Olivia Tremor Control's only show in America, guy. I think you can bank on the event of them playing one of their most popular songs. I, on the other hand, requested NYC-25 a couple of times, politely yelling above everyone and even not into this douchebag's ear. Scott Spillane acknowledged my request, but he unfortunately didn't relay the message to the rest of the band. So he can suck it. When I was closer, I did manage to snag this great picture of John Fernandes:

John Fernandes.

After the really extreme-hardcore dancing began around the time of Memories of Jacqueline 1906, I began to give that bald guy what he was asking for. I was all over the place, occasionally showing this fool what the meaning of grind really was. During Hideaway, this guy reaches his hand up to John Fernandes, and after seeing him reaching for a high-five, totally denies him. You go, John. The encore of I Can Smell The Leaves (one of my favorites that I totally wasn't expecting to hear) and Opera House was really great as well. Overall, it was a show that I am sorry anyone missed. Everyone should have been there. Here is a shot of my cousin Bart with his head transposed onto the body of a fireman:

Bart is hot.
