Doves - Some Cities

Doves has done something that I wouldn't have expected them to do. They have recorded my favorite album of 2005 (so far): Some Cities. It gets better and better with each listen. I couldn't have sequenced the album any better than they already have (a big problem I have with albums today). The first single off of Some Cities, Black and White Town (lyrics), is a perfect way to get acquainted with the album. It's very bip-boppy, like many of their other songs. It's also a great precursor to the rest of the album, which necessarily isn't a departure from their old sound, but it definitely has evolved and developed into something I really, really like. It just seems more focused. If you go over to Matt's blog, you can download the entire thing. I have the single here for your downloading pleasure, if you YSI links died.

Apple to buy TiVo?

Although there have been rumors about this happening for a while now, speculation about Apple buying TiVo caused shares of TiVo to go up 17% yesterday. TiVo's chief executive, Michael Ramsay, said that there is no chance of this happening. I wouldn't rule it out, though. I can't decide if this would be a good thing or a bad thing; TiVo's current setup seems to be pretty favorable amongst its users. If Apple came into the picture, it looks like they could do some amazing stuff with it.

The Life Aquatic: Criterion Edition

I was extra-excited today when I saw news that The Life Aquatic will be given the Criterion treatment come May 10. Supplemental material will include a director's commentary (I really wish Bill Murray would sit in with Wes and comment on the film), deleted scenes, cast and crew interviews, and other features (I hope storyboards are included, a la Rushmore). I know many people will gripe about how The Life Aquatic doesn't deserve being released as a Criterion Collection set, but I could care less of what they think. I thought that The Life Aquatic was an excellent film, and will be well-worth spending money on. Although I would love a re-release of Bottle Rocket through the Criterion Collection, I can definitely settle with this for now.

I love Reality TV too, but c'mon...

...doesn't this sound a bit ridiculous? Would Janis really want to be immortalized via some reality show? The world tour, etc. sounds cool and all, but the whole reality show thing seems to be taking it a bit too far.

Banning Shakespeare in Alabama's libraries?

Can you believe that someone like this can seriously propose such an OUTRAGEOUS bill such as this? How do people like this actually get elected? I can't really express my anger for this fellow (one of our state representatives) in words. I just hope the people in the state legislature shoot this down as swiftly as possible.

Arrested Developement on way to be cancelled?

If FOX actually goes through with this plan, they will probably make the biggest mistake possible: cutting down Arrested Development until there is no more to chop off. I suppose switching the time slot now couldn't possibly change the viewership by all that much (it averages 6.06 viewers per week), but if they continue to give it the short end of the stick, Arrested Development could come to a premature cancelleation. Then again, it's not like they haven't been through that before.
