Deaner and Gener Tour the West
Dean and Gene Ween of rock-group extraordinaries,
Ween, will be touring the West Coast in October, starting in Alaska. This will serve as a break from them recording their follow up to last year's
Quebec (who didn't love
Transdermal Celebration?).

Travis:Singles
Glasgow band
Travis are going to release a compilation of their singles, Travis:Singles, on November 1st. A new song,
Walking In The Sun, will be released as a single on October 18th. The producer of
Walking In The Sun is
Nigel Godrich, suggesting that this is either a new song, or they have teamed back up with the producer, famous for producing albums by such artists as
Beck and
Radiohead (Tchad Blake produced
Travis' fourth studio album,
12 Memories.) Hopefully,
Nigel will be there to produce
Travis' fifth studio venture.
In other
Travis news, they are planning on releasing a long-overdue DVD containing all of their videos (if it's as good as their
Live in Glasgow DVD, I'll be satisfied).

50 Cent Booed Off Stage
Rapper
50 Cent was booed off stage yesterday at the
Reading Festival. He was hit with water bottles, and even a camping chair! How jawsome is that?

Album 5 Update
Rick Rubin, the producer of
Weezer's latest and unreleased LP, is no longer working with the band on a day-to-day basis. This could be good news, or bad news, seeing as
Weezer produced both
Pinkteron and
Maladroit by themselves.

Want a WWF Heavyweight Championship Belt?
Ultimate Warrior, a professional wrestler in the
WWF back from the early 90's, is
auctioning off one of his championship belts on
eBay. Anyone with half a brain and 24,000 dollars to spare would be wise to purchase this
valuable piece of sports memorabilia.

New Survivor Commercial
I almost forgot about the
Survivor: Vanuatu commercial I saw last night, which was great. They had
Rupert Boneham give some advice, and at the end, made him laugh like some sort of professional wrestler. It was also funny when he told them they were gonna get "burned," which is a lame allusion to the "Islands of Fire." Best Survivor commercial I've seen yet.

Amazing Race: August 24th
I really liked this week's episode of Amazing Race, it may even be my favorite of the season so far (I loved the Charla/Mirna footage at the end of the August 17th episode -- what were you thinking, Bruckheimer?) Colin deserved all of that trouble he got into. How stupid could he be? I almost wish he would have been thrown into that prison. I was hoping that maybe The Bowling Moms would be left behind to finish last (considering they are the bane of my existence, next to Charla and Mirna, that is), but of course they caught back up. Nicole was also right in scolding Brandon about the money -- Chip should watch how he spends his money too. Kami should have listened to Karli (it may be the other way around, I have no idea) when she wanted to stop at the flag the first time they saw it -- they would probably still have all of their money (and those stupid Bowling Moms would be stuck without any money). I thought it was all over when The Moms got stuck in that hole, but of course they get away with getting out just in time to finish fourth place, directly in front of The Twins. I guess I'm glad The Moms are still in it, I need someone to hate to keep me really interested in this season.

Phoenix,
The Bees,
Elbow,
Badly Drawn Boy,
The Strokes,
The Pixies,
Primal Scream,
Massive Attack,
Fountains of Wayne,

Pink -- how does she always manage to make her way into these awesome events and just ruin it for everyone?) Tickets have even already gone on sale for next year's
V Festival, with a reduced price available through October. If you happen to be in the Staffordshire area next summer, make sure to buy yourself a ticket.

There are still a few things left unexplained since I started this blog. One of those things is the Downloads section, located to the left. I am in no way attempting to be a full-fledged mp3 blog. These are merely songs that I happen to thoroughly enjoy. Every Friday (after this one) I will change up the Download lineup, so snag them while you can.

Breaking Away
The first move we will be viewing in Film Appreciation Society this year will be
Breaking Away. Set in Bloomington, Indiana (
Indiana University), in the 1970's, it tells the story of Dave Stoller. Dave is a bicycle-enthusiast, and dreams of not only racing with the Italian cyclists, but also actually
being an Italian. His poor, "Cutter," lifestyle prevents him from becoming anything more than a quarryworker, though, just like the rest of the high school graduates raised in Bloomington (Cutter = Stone Cutter). Only when he has his dream stripped away from him does he realize that he doesn't need to become someone else in order to become great.

New Pixies Not Coming Soon
Frank Black of
The Pixies says that no one should expect any sort of new album anytime soon. I wasn't very surprised when I heard this -- I only hope the band members are on good terms long enough as to where they will actually record more new material.

Postal Service News
Billboard tells us that
The Postal Service may be planning a tour together later on in 2004, all depending on Ben Gibbard's and Jimmy Tamborello's main schedules. They've only played 30 or so live shows together, so the demand for the live experience is well understood. I would love to go to Atlanta or Birmingham to see them; I'd be willing to bet that it's a fine show. Billboard also mentions that the tour would likely occur before the new album comes out.

Phish Insanity
Over the last weekend, Phish played, or attempted to play, their last concert in
Coventry, Vermont. Considering the torrential rains they have been receiving via
Charley, the place is covered with mud, a la
Bonnaroo 2004. 40,000 people entered the venue before the police stopped letting people drive their cars onto the camping area, claiming the area had turned into an, "impassable quagmire." So, just like any old smelly hippie would do, they abandoned their cars on the side of the road, and walked twelve miles to the camp site instead. Surprisingly, the people attending the concert are being pretty calm, and aren't causing any riotous behavior. If you ask me, Phish can't go out this way, and I'm guessing that they will probably put on another farewell show when the weather and everything else permits.

I don't mean to steal a good scoop from
Uncle Grambo or anything, but I couldn't believe it when I read that Craig Kilborn is leaving The Late Late Show! I never did like his actual show, but he had good music acts on every once and a while (i.e. Morrissey on for an entire week). I don't want Jon Stewart to leave The Daily Show, and I certainly don't want Conan to move from NBC (for the sake of losing writers, etc.) Maybe, just maybe, if we pray hard enough, they'll bring back Arsenio.

New Oasis DVD
In music news, the best British rock band since The Beatles, Oasis, are releasing a new
DVD in September, in order to celebrate the anniversary of their first LP,
Definitely Maybe. I'm pretty interested in this release, and am hoping September 6 means it's not only being released overseas on that date, but also in America.
...In other Oasis news, they are still at work on their new untitled LP. I'm not even sure if they are still
working on it with Death by Vegas. Guess we'll find out sooner or later.

Tentative Film Appreciation Society Movie-list.
Well, some of you may know that I am heading up AHS' Film Appreciation Society this year. Over the course of the entire summer, I have viewed as many movies as possible, and have given the club lots of thought. I don't want this club to lose any momentum, and end up getting the ax next year, and so on. Here is the short-list of the movies I am considering showing in Film Appreciation Society for the school year of 2004-2005:
Serpico (1973)
Hang 'Em High (1968)
On the Waterfront (1954)
Paper Moon (1973)
Boys Town (1938)
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
The Longest Day (1962)
Failsafe (1964)
The Deer Hunter (1978)
The Last Picture Show (1971)
Network (1976)
Red River (1948)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
My Darling Clementine (1946)
No Time For Sergeants (1958)
In Cold Blood (1967)
Once Upon A Time In The West (1968)
Breaking Away (1979)
The Sting (1973)
Citizen Kane (1941)
The Bad News Bears (1976)
12 Angry Men (1957)
North By Northwest (1957)
The Paper Chase (1973)
These are just a few of the movies on my list. I'll try to set up a meeting in the next few weeks, hopefully before August ends. Other details will be discussed at the first meeting.

Last night's Amazing Race was pretty good, I thought. Colin's decision to use his fast forward came back and bit him in the ass, which was coming to them I thought. The Bowling Moms were digging HUGE holes in the ground when the event clearly called for mere sifting through the sand. They almost deserved last place more then Mirna and Charla. I was especially excited when I saw that Colin and Mirna were quarelling, and the previews for next week's episode showed more. I was also please when I saw them finish 5th. Not as bad as I wanted them to do, but not bad at all.

RIAA Radar
I was browsing a few of my daily music-reads, when I stumbled across this nice little tool. The RIAA Radar is supposed to "help your purchasing research." You can search for any album, and see if the RIAA leaked it itself. It'll be nice to have this for a little reassurance next time I download an album.

Northpinellas: Man gets 5 days for airport tantrum
I couldn't believe this when I read it. I mean, I
love all things professional wrestling, especially when it comes to any legendary wrestler. This is by far one of the best ways to get arrested, though. I know if I were ever in any way to be apprehended by the police, it would most definitely be in this fashion.

RIP, Bitch
Unfortunately,
Rick James died today at age 56. I'm glad he died in good spirits, though. I wonder if Dave Chappelle's Rick James act will continue to exist, though. We can only pray that it continues to live on in some form or another, though.

Amazing Race: August 3rd
Amazing Race last night wasn't all that bad, despite Charla and Mirna finishing in second place. What I don't get is why Colin and Christie used their Fast Forward in last night's leg of the race...
Christie: (regarding Fast Forward) You wanna do it?
Colin: May as well. We're in first place.
They had a
huge lead, and were obviously going to finish first. They should have saved it, considering they finish near last almost every leg of the race. I can never be all that mad as long as Charla and Mirna don't finish first. We're prayin' like hell that they finish last next week.

New Beck
Beck's new LP has recently been described as "aggressive" by
Pitchfork today. Regulars Nigel Godrich and The Dust Bros. return to help him record, along with Jack White. I am very intrigued by this collaboration, and hope something meaningful is produced. But then again, any Beck news is good news.

Chappelle's New Deal
Dave Chappelle recently signed a
new contract with Comedy Central to keep his show running for two more seasons. And for two seasons, Comedy Central has given him
$50 million. I really can't believe Comedy Central would have that kind of money to just throw around. I didn't really care which network he signed with, I'd still be buying the DVD nonetheless.
