Ringo Starr To Play With Oasis?

Ringo Starr, of Beatles fame, is possibly guesting with Oasis on one of their new songs off of their long-awaited sixth LP. Ringo's son, Zak, is temping as Oasis' drummer for their untitled new album. Since Oasis is finishing the sessions in Los Angeles, Noel figured that they could convince ole Ringo to guest on a song that...

"...sounds like The Beatles and we’re gonna try and get him and his dad on the same track. Then again, Ringo might just tell us to fuck off."

If Oasis' history with former Beatles members are any sort of precursor as to whether or not Ringo will lend his talents, I would take a wild guess and say he will refuse. If it's evidence you want, here is a taste (this happens to be one of my all-time favorite moments in rock history) of their rocky history together:

"In January 1998, the Gallaghers got George Harrison's son Dhani drunk on a New York-London flight. Arriving at the airport, Noel said to George: 'Hello George, here's your son. You have just been Gallaghered. Go and puke up in your Ashford home, while my stomach gently retches.'"

Conan To Replace Jay in 2009!

In HUGE, BREAKING news, Conan O'Brien, the current king of late night, will replace Jay Leno in the Tonight Show spot in 2009. O'Brien signed a contract today guaranteeing that he will take the spot once Leno's five year contract runs out. FINALLY some "good" (could be bad if Conan tones down his humor for the earlier time slot) news for The Tonight Show.

Snow Patrol Album Due Next Autumn

Snow Patrol are planning on releasing a new LP in the fall of 2005. Gary Lightbody says that they would have liked to have released one earlier, but their massive stateside tour has kept them from doing so (they are jealous of Franz Ferdinand, who despite touring nonstop in the US, have "basically finished" the writing of their new album). Autumn of '05 seems awfully early to me anyway, and I wouldn't mind waiting on new material if it meant that it would be of higher quality.

New Oasis Album Release Date

Oasis have finally put a release date of May 26 on their long-awaited sixth studio album (which I believe still doesn't have a proper title). It will probably just be a one-disc set, unlike the rumored three-disc or two-disc set that Noel was talking about earlier in the year. Even though it does seem like a long way away, I'm sure it will be leaked somewhere along the way.

Cat Stevens Not Allowed Entrance To U.S.?

Yesterday, a flight that was carrying famed folk musician Cat Stevens was diverted from its initial destination of Washington DC to somewhere in Maine. I understand that he was sort of controversial in the 80's concerning a decision the Ayatollah Khomeini made about executing a man (and accusations that he has donated large sums of money to terrorist group Hamas, even though he has vehemently denied those allegations). C'mon, it's Cat Stevens for crying out loud.

The Might Be Giants Kids' Book/DVD?

They Might Be Giants are known for their nearly innate ability to craft a nice, catchy pop song that anyone can enjoy. It makes sense that they are releasing both picture book/CD sets for kids and a DVD. The DVD, entitled "Here Come The ABC's," will be released by Disney Sound as well. Most of the DVD is animated, with it being inspired by the enhanced portion of their 2002 album, "No," which happened to debut at Number 1 on Billboard's Top Kid Audio chart.

Get Your Pixies Fix On Vinyl (Again)

Along with the other million things that The Pixies have done this year, they are also reissuing their first three albums on vinyl (Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, and Doolittle). The releases will include the original artwork and everything (and in the vein of Weezer's Blue Album reissue, Doolittle will now include lyrics to its songs).

New Lemonheads?

Evan Dando has recently said that he is almost done writing the new Lemonheads album. After an eight-year hiatus, I wouldn't have expected them to get back together for another album. If they are going to go through the trouble of putting together a new album, it better be worth it.

Explosions In The Sky Score For Thornton?

Billy Bob Thornton is starring in a new movie called "Friday Night Lights." Also starring in this movie is Neo-Country superstar, Tim McGraw. The movie is about a poor Texas town and its high school football team, and how the football team is all that the town has. Rock 'n' Roll superstars Explosions In The Sky are scoring the film. You may ask yourself, "What does this movie and Explosions In The Sky have in common?" Answer: Texas. Explosions In the Sky are based in Midland (home of none other than George W.), and the movie is based on a town in Texas.

Explosions In The Sky are combining old pieces of music that have already appeard on their records (The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place, Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die...) with new pieces that they have written specifically for the movie (an interesting idea if I've ever heard one, and those Explosions In The Sky never cease to amaze me with their musical prowess). The only downside to this OST may be the apparent lack of drums, my personal favorite instrument in Explosions In The Sky. I'm not complaining, and I can't wait for its release on October 15th (I'm not sure when the actual film will be released).

As if you cannot take anymore news about Friday Night Lights, here is the trailer (featuring one of my favorite Beck songs, "The Golden Age").

"Blinded By The Lights" Banned!

The new Streets video for "Blinded By The Lights" was banned today by Ofcom over in the UK today. Ofcom banned the video for showing Mike Skinner (The Streets) taking drugs, receiving oral sex, and being beaten up pretty badly all at a wedding, all of which I can see their reasons for the banning. The video has been completely banned by music video outlets such as Top Of The Pops and CD:UK, and they are requesting Skinner to do an edited version of the song for them in their studios. MTV, on the other hand, can show the video anytime after 11 P.M.

Or, you can go back to my original post on the video and watch it there.

Shortlist 2004

The finalists for this year’s Shortlist Award were announced today, with artists Wilco, Air, The Streets, Loretta Lynn, Franz Ferdinand, Nellie McKay, Ghostface Killah, TV On The Radio, The Killers, and Dizzee Rascal. Although I would like to say that Wilco deserves this award, I’m leaning toward Franz Ferdinand (nothing catchier has been released this year).

Another Field Day Festival?

Apparently, there are plans for another Field Day Festival in New York, this time in the Hudson Valley. Plans for the first Field Day Festival fell through in 2003, when the city of Riverhead, NY refused to give Andrew Dreskin, the festival organizer, the proper permit right at the last minute (it was moved to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, to great aversion). The lineup for the 2003 Field Day Festival looked phenomenal, almost at Coachella-levels of indie-ness, including Elliott Smith, Spiritualized, Beck, Radiohead, Blur, My Morning Jacket, and 22-20s. Dreskin already has the proper documents in place, with fifty to sixty acts playing either July 16 and 17, or July 23 and 24, 2005. Expect such acts as Radiohead, The Beastie Boys, and Norah Jones.

Thom and Chris

Thom Yorke and Chris Martin recently appeared on stage with music-legends REM in London. Chris came along and sung parts of "Man On The Moon" on the 14th, while Thom sung the REM classic, "E-Bow The Letter" last night at an apparent "secret" concert at St. James' Church.

In other REM news, they will be touring the UK twice in 2005, both in February and June, in support of their new album "Around The Sun."

Hurricane? More like hurri-LAME!

Hurricane Ivan was supposed to be terrible in Auburn. I'm not denying the fact that terrible things did not occur, just nothing happened in our neighborhood. The only really bad part was the lack of electricity, a necessity for my sister and I. A few of my friends actually went to the creek today to go swimming during the storm, that is how much of a pansy this storm was. I hope everyone is safe, etc etc.

One bonus that came with this storm was the visitation by my immediate relatives that reside in Fairhope, AL. I thought that this visit would be a bad experience, but I was wrong [aside from the 10 animals they brought with them. The dogs were barking so much two nights ago that some dillweed called the police with a noise complaint (they weren't barking that loud)]. With them came my cousin, Hunter, who is very cool. She let me borrow ALL of her CDs for a solid week (I'm talking A LOT of music -- 4 garbage-bag loads of it!). Major props to her.

More Oasis News

As if you couldn't handle any more Oasis posts in one day, new news about Oasis' new album appears. Noel explains that they scrapped the sessions with Death By Vegas because they ran out of time to help produce the new album. Noel, etc. tried to finish what they had started with Death By Vegas, but came up with nothing. So, they started from scratch, and apparently have four new songs written already. Unfortunately, there aren't any plans to release a new single until February of '05.

Definitely Maybe DVD

If you know me, and I mean even vaguely know me, you must know that I am a huge Oasis fan (does the term "Oasis-head" exist? If it does, that's me). I've casually liked Oasis for a while now, but I really started to love this last school year in Journalism class, along with my pals Richard, Matt, Honoré, and Britney. I have been a rabid fan since then.

Oasis released a DVD commemorating the 10th anniversary of the release of their debut, Definitely Maybe, this past Tuesday. I had been anticipating this purchase since I first posted about it in August. I already own There and Then, have looked for Live By The Sea, and haven't even bothered with Familiar to Millions, and was excited to add this to my collection. I went to my local Hastings directly after school, searched through their music DVD section, and to my disappointment, did not find it. As I walked away in utter disgust of the music DVD selection at Hastings, I decided to look at the "New Release" wall. I had not thought of looking there previously, because when I looked for the Belle and Sebastian DVD, Fans Only, there earlier this year on release day, it wasn't there (it was in the music DVD section). So, as I turned around, I found it. I instantly snatched it up, because it was the only copy present (I know how many people would be looking for it). I checked it out, and went home as fast as possible. When I put disc one in my DVD player, I knew exactly what was in store.

Oasis wastes no time. Right from the get-go, they knock you on your ass with their greatness. There are no introduction screens or flashy menus -- it takes you straight to the first song of the album (Rock 'n' Roll Star). The only way I can describe this DVD is that its setup resembles one of those crappy "Choose Your Own Adventure" books that you read in elementary school. From the screen with the song playing, you can hit any direction on your remote to go to a different section of the DVD pertaining to that specific song. For instance, if you were listening to Shakermaker, you could press "up" to go to a documentary, "down" to go to the promo video for Shakermaker, "left" to go to a live perfomance of the song, and so on. The live performances of the songs are exceptional, all of them dating from their 1994 tour. The documentaries are comprehensive, and the promo videos are exciting to watch.

Not only do they give you the album with all of that extra stuff added with it, they also throw a bonus DVD at you. Various live performances and documentaries are included on this DVD, and it is only available until the end of 2004. As if you think it can't get possibly any better, the DVD includes commentary from Burt Bacharach. Bam!

This DVD was worth every last red cent I paid for it. For a mere $15.87, you can provide yourself with over four jam-packed hours of Oasis-goodness. Don't waste any more time -- go and buy it now.

Elliott Smith DVD

A new Elliott Smith DVD is coming out in November of his performance in Olympia, WA in 1999 at the Yo Yo a Go Go festival. I don't know why, but it is being advertised as one of his last solo shows, even though he toured solo in 2003. I can't wait, considering I wasn't able to attend any of his live performances and there aren't many Elliott Smith videos floating around. Hopefully this will somehow hurt the business of selling bootlegged live DVDs of Elliott on eBay.

Everyone needs to download the songs to the left by n.Lannon. I can see where the critics were coming from when they describe him as a cross between Elliott Smith and The Postal Service --that's probably why I am so attracted to his music.

More Travis News

I don't know how this news passed me by, but Travis are releasing a new DVD, entitled "Travis at the Palace." It's a DVD of their December 3, 2003 performance at the Alexandra Palace in London. Look out for it on store shelves on September 14th.

Travis are also releasing a cover of Cat Stevens' "Don't Be Shy" for the Everwood soundtrack. I know that they released a song for another WB show (they used "I Love You Anyways" on Felicity one time, if I remember a thread I read on the Travis messageboard correctly).

Poor Ol' Pete

Pete Doherty, formerly of the UK band, The Libertines, was given his sentencing for carrying a knife with him. He was sentenced to four months of jail time, but his service of those four months has been suspended for 12 months. The judge's reasoning behind the jail time and not something more lenient (such as community sentence) was that he was "suitable." He has had a pretty bad year, considering his being dropped from the band for his drug problems, being attacked (the guy who apparently attacked told him he was going to break his nose and stick a knife in his neck), and being absent from his own concert. Who knows what will happen to poor ol' Pete next.
